Our
Story
This is the story about an old building that needs some love and support, and about a community that came together to create something amazing. The North Dufferin Community Centre has a long history of hockey, baseball, weddings, events and has been a safe haven for some and weathered many a winter storm. Over the years members of the community have gathered to play, celebrate and mourn. It’s more than just an arena or building, it is a place where memories are made. Over a hundred years ago it was first built as a place for families and kids to skate. A place to hang out and catch up with neighbours during the winter months with other local farm families. It was soon realized that the community wanted more and funds were raised to build a “real” arena. Games were played, tournaments were held and fans cheered the players on. Over the years fans and families continued to make improvements and additions to the arena. Many skaters stepped onto the ice and dreamed of playing in the NHL. Tragically those dreams all came to a halt the day the arena burnt to the ground in 1965. Honeywood without an arena was unfathomable, it had been the heart of the community for decades. What happened next was a defining moment in our history…the families, farms, and businesses came together to create a new arena, a place to gather, a place to celebrate and a place to dream. Kids grew up humming the Hockey Night in Canada theme song, and some kids even went on to play in the NHL and brought home the CUP…all because the community, wanted to do something more, not for themselves, but for their kids and grandkids. Close to 60 years later, countless generations have come to make Honeywood part of their core memories. Now we are faced with a challenge. The building has aged and requires extensive repairs. It’s time to re-envision the heart of the community and come together once more. Let our actions inspire our children, and let this moment be an important part of our history. Join us and be part of something special. Be part of history in the making.
This is… my Honeywood.
